I just want to make an alias so instead of typing out some big long command I can just do /p or whatever to do that command.

You should still be able to do this and without scripting think alias in mirc or user command in xchat. The latter even able to be done right inside the chat client. There are two fields name and command the user fills them in and that's that so i can type recover in for the name field and /msg memoserv@… recover Cancel $1 in the command field. Now I can just /recover mypass without any external scripting language. This probably isn't a show stopper for anyone but this is actually a standard feature even in console clients.
